HISTORY
Mary is an accomplished trial attorney with extensive experience litigating complex matters across a variety of practice areas. Mary leverages her experience to pinpoint legal issues, and anticipate her opponent’s arguments in order to strategically represent clients throughout the litigation process.
At Peter Capello, Joanna’s practice focuses on representing clients in personal injury cases, including mass tort cases. Mary has tried more than a dozen jury trials, and has represented clients in federal and state courts across the country.
Prior to joining the firm, Mary spent over five years practicing as a civil defense attorney. During that time, she represented clients in a variety of industries including trucking, insurance, recreational transportation, retail, engineering, railroad, and propane. Mary has experience in all stages of litigation including scene investigations, product inspections, written discovery, preparing witnesses and experts to testify, taking, and defending depositions, motion practice, handling substantive hearings, mediation, and trial. Mary successfully defended fortune 500 companies, privately owned companies, and insurance companies in various matters. This experience provides her with an uncanny ability to anticipate her opponent’s arguments, and craft effective legal strategies to best represent her clients.
CAREER
Mary began her legal career as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in Jackson County, Missouri. During her time as a prosecutor Mary worked in the Special Victim’s Unit, where she handled the prosecution of crimes involving domestic and sexual violence. Mary tried numerous jury trials for crimes including murder, assault, rape, and child molestation. This experience makes her uniquely skilled at guiding clients through legal situations when they are at their most vulnerable.
Mary earned her law degree from the University of Missouri- Kansas City where she served as an elected class representative of the Student Bar Association, and received Dean’s List recognition. She is licensed to practice in Kansas and Missouri, and has been admitted to the United States District Court of Kansas, and the Western District of Missouri. Mary earned her undergraduate degree in Political Science, from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
